Fanlisting ::
A fanlisting, just as its name implies, is a listing of fans for a given topic. The concept was created by one person, Janine, some time ago. There is only one approved fanlisting per subject and all the approved fanlists make up an immense database at Fanlisting, which is manned by some 60 volunteers.
This particular fanlisting is the official fanlisting for Mort of Terry Pratchett's book by the same name.
Mort ::
Mortimer, universally called Mort, is the protagonist of the novel, "Mort" by Terry Pratchett. He is a young farmer lad, about sixteen summers or so, who is all knees and elbows. When Mort's father decides it's time for his awkward son to begin his future he takes him to the fair to find him a mentor and apprenticeship. Mort stands with the other trade-seeking boys all day long, but he is not picked up. The day fades way and just as all hope for gainful employment seems lost, a stealthy gentleman shows up and says Mort is just the boy he is looking for. Mort's father, delighted, turns over his son with all the best wishes for him in becoming a man with a trade.
There's something different about Mort's new boss though, something his father seems to have missed. He's skeletal. Wait, no. He's actually a skeleton. In fact, he's Death. The Grim Reaper and he's looking for an assistant.
Mort becomes the apprentice to Death, who is going through a bit of a phase wanting to branch out into more mortal activities (like being a fry-cook). Mort lives in Death's house, banters with Death's live-in butler, Albert and hobnobs with Death's adopted daughter, Ysabel, all the while taking on the responsibility of ending lives.
And here I could barely cope with answering phones at my internship.
Things are going swimmingly until Mort misses a target and doesn't reap the soul of a princess who was meant to die.
With the tide of fate set eschew it's up to Mort and Ysabel to figure out what to do with the undead princess, despite Death's current MIA status and Albert's apparent attempts to thwart their cause.
Why ::
I read the book "Mort" when it was recommended to me by my friend, "Sayyes." She said she could get no one to read her books and she watched "It's A Wonderful Life" for me, so I felt I owed it to her to check out this "Mort" thing. I read the novel on a plane flight and thoroughly enjoyed "Mort." He reminded me of myself at my internship. A sort of deer-caught-in-the-headlights sort of thing.
When I got home I decided a fanlisting was in order. So here we are. I dedicate this fanlisting to Sayyes as a gift of appreciation and thanks.

The images used on "Intern of Death" are actually photos of Tobey Maguire found here, though his hair is credited to the film, "Napoleon Dynamite" via screencaps I took myself. The opening phrase is from the book, "Mort" by Terry Pratchett, save for the Latin bit which was lifted from an cover illustration of another Pratchett book, "Family Values." Lyrics on the splash page are from the song, "If I Ever Leave This World Alive" by the Finn Brothers.
